Fall Protection Training Overview

MSA’s Safety at Heights Fall Protection education training programs are designed for both MSA Channel Partners and end user owners of MSA Fall Protection equipment.

MSA training courses give you the opportunity to participate in the most active, hands-on, solutions-based training available. Our comprehensive, hands-on courses can be taught at your facility or at one of MSA’s North American training facilities, which are located in Denver, CO, Chicago, IL, Houston TX, Pittsburgh, PA, Toronto ON, and Edmonton AB, Canada. Our training facilities are unsurpassed in the industry and offer an unparalleled training experience.

Advanced registration for these programs is required.

Authorized Person for Safety at Heights

Course No. ZT-APHEIGHTS

1 Day

The Authorized Person for Safety at Heights course is designed for the Fall Protection equipment user, or At Risk Worker, as well as their Supervisors or Manager, and the Safety Professional.

At the completion of this course, the participants will be able to discuss and demonstrate the following topics:

  • Consensus Standards
  • Dynamics of a Fall
  • Fall hazard recognition and assessment
  • Understanding impact forces
  • Hierarchy of Controls
  • Procedures for continuous Safety at Heights
  • Selection, application, and use of fall protection systems
  • Calculating fall clearances

  • 1 Day of hands-on instruction by an MSA factory trained instructor
  • The MSA Authorized Person for Safety at Heights instruction training manual and supporting documents
  • Lunch and refreshments during the breaks in training

Competent Person for Equipment Inspection

Course No. ZT-CPINSPECT

The Competent Person for Equipment Inspection course is designed for the Fall Protection equipment user, or At Risk Worker, as well as their Supervisors or Manager, and the Safety Professional.

At the completion of this course, the participants will be able to discuss and demonstrate the following topics:

  • Consensus Standards
  • Formal documentation requirements
  • Formal inspection process, including the criteria for pass/fail and disposal
  • Equipment cleaning and storage

  • 1/2 day of hands-on instruction by an MSA factory trained instructor.
  • The MSA Competent Person for Equipment Inspection instruction training manual and supporting documents

Competent Person for Fall Protection (US Military ONLY)

Course No. ZT-CPFALLPROT

3 Days

This course is designed for facility and site supervisors who must also serve as the competent person required by EM385-1-1 Army Corp of Engineers requirements. The training focuses on fall prevention and protection, roles of the worker, constructing a fall protection system, pre-use and competent person inspection, recognizing, evaluating and controlling risks and hazards. This course meets all the USACE requirements outlined in the EM 385.1 manual.

The 3 day course is comprised of the following:

  • Application limitations When Utilizing Each Component of a Personal Fall Protection System

Competent Person for Horizontal Lifeline Installation and Inspection

The Competent Person for Horizontal Lifeline Installation and Inspection course is designed for the Fall Protection equipment user, or At Risk Worker, as well as their Supervisors or Manager, and the Safety Professional.

  • Design statement, use and limitations
  • Installation procedures
  • Inspection criteria, including pass/fail and disposal
  • Cleaning and storage

The Competent Person for Safety at Heights course is designed for Supervisors, Managers, and Safety Professionals responsible for Fall Protection programs.

  • Rescue Planning for Safety at Heights course

Competent Person for Safety at Heights - Recertification

This 1 day course is comprised of a review of the:

Competent Tower Climber

Course No. ZT-TOWER

2 Day

MSA's new Competent Tower Climber course is designed to meet the needs of climbers in the telecommunications and utility tower climbing industry who work or supervise activities in construction, maintenance and tower upgrades. Building on MSA's safety equipment manufacturing knowledge, the course follows the training and procedural protocols laid-out by OSHA and the FCC's "Communication Tower Best Practices" as well as the National Association of Tower Erectors (NATE) CTS 4th Edition Fall Protection Training Standard. The training class is designed for those new to the industry as well as those individuals with greater experience who need to meet federal regulatory safety requirements and industry best practices. It also covers topics needed to meet contractor specifications for tower climbers prior to being allowed access to tower sites. The course is led by industry-experienced climbers and includes practise on ROHN and self-supporter tower simulators.

The 2 day course is comprised of:

  • Fall protection 101

  • Tower industry introduction
  • Practical, hands-on activities

Fall Protection Awareness

MSA offers an introduction to Safety at Heights through its 4 Hour Fall Protection Awareness course. This course is designed for employees that are regularly required to work at height.

At the successful completion of this course, the participants will be able to discuss and demonstrate the following topics:

  • ABCs of fall protection
  • Proper selection, pre-use inspection and care of fall protection equipment
  • Proper donning and doffing of a harness
  • Hazard recognition, evaluation and control
  • Fall clearance calculations

  • The MSA Fall Protection Awareness instruction training manual and supporting documents
  • Exam and MSA Fall Protection Awareness Certificate

 

Onsite Equipment Inspection Service

MSA offers a simple solution to help reduce lost time and liability by offering organizations on-site documented competent equipment inspections. Our trained professionals will come to your site to conduct the written inspection for all your fall protection products.

MSA will provide a detailed written report with the disposition of each product as well as a spreadsheet that can be maintained or updated as equipment is removed or added to service throughout the year.

MSA will offer this service for all brands of fall protection as long as the organization has the equipment manual.

Onsite Survey, Hazard Assessment, and Audit Report Service

MSA will send one of our trained professionals to conduct a facility walk through or we can focus on one particular area or safety concern.

This service will include a pictorial, written report documenting the hazards and deficiencies found during the audit, recommendations or corrective actions and a review of the organizations safety policy and procedures to ensure that all local regulatory requirements are being met.

The Qualified Person for Safety at Heights course is designed for Engineers, Designers, and Safety professionals who have previously successfully completed the initial Competent Person for Safety at Heights ZT-CPHEIGHTS course.

This comprehensive 4 day specialized course is comprised of a high level of Fall Protection system design and engineering calculations. A background in these disciplines is recommended.

Working at Heights - Ontario, Canada ONLY

Course No. ZT-MOLWAH-8HR

1 Day

The province of Ontario’s Working at Heights Training Program Standard identifies the requirements that must be met to support consistent and quality training for workers in the province of Ontario. MSA is accredited to offer a comprehensive, performance-based training program that meets or exceeds the core competency requirements for Working at Heights in Ontario. This 1 day training course meets the requirements as directed by the April 1, 2015 training program and provider standards established by the Chief Prevention Officer.

MODULE 1: Working at Heights Basic Theory

  • Rights and responsibilities related to working at heights
  • General hazard recognition
  • Fall protection hierarchy of controls
  • Personal fall arrest equipment
  • Safety procedures for warning systems and physical barriers
